SAMANTHA Vaughan can often be seen running round her Orford salon with bubbles in one hand and clippers in the other but it’s all part of the service.

Eighteen months ago the 32-year-old opened The Barbershop on Norris Street where she runs a family-orientated business specialising in children’s haircuts.

Here, in our feature Meet The Salon Owner, the mum-of-three tells us why children look forward to having their hair cut in her salon and how she has been asked to provide ‘distress-me-not-trims’ to youngsters in local schools.

What do you do? What services do you provide?

I’m a mum of three – Daisy, Hattie and Teddie – and my youngest two children have additional needs. I’m renowned for my work with children and adults who I like to describe as “strong willed” and “high spirited”. It isn’t always rainbows and butterflies but we have fun trying! It’s a process that takes time but the outcome is worth it. There are plenty of kids who have screamed the shop down and now they are completely different. They even look forward to coming for their hair cut!

What’s your hair and beauty background?

I started my career around 10 years ago as an apprentice barber at Lords of the North in town centre. The guys there are amazing and certainly a cut above the rest. Without Cheryl and the team I wouldn’t be Sam at the Barbershop. I’m forever grateful to everyone who helped me on my journey.

What makes your business different to others in the same area/field? What sets your business apart from your competitors?

I am often described as having the patience of a saint. I’ve a huge following from carers and parents in Warrington and further afield. Both my youngest children have additional needs so I’ve first-hand experience. I’ve adapted different techniques so each customer has the best experience possible. I remember visits to the hairdressers or shoe shopping being a total nightmare so I want to make sure having their hair cut is a more pleasant time for every child. I’m often seen chasing little ones round the shop with bubbles in hand and clippers in the other.

Why do loyal clients return to your business?

I believe I have the best job in the world and it’s definitely the most rewarding. My dedication to the families who visit the shop is second to none. I have a great rapport with my customers and their families and the shop is at the heart of so many people’s lives. My children have made friends with children who they say are “just like them”. I’ve bonded with so many parents. Having been told horror stories of barbers charging extra for children who find it hard to sit still or even half-finished haircuts, customers know they can expect to be treated properly at The Barbershop.

What’s next? What do the next few months hold for you and your salon?

I have been asked to attend local educational settings to provide distress-me-not-trims. This will be an amazing opportunity for children to get used to having their hair cut. The children will be able to see and feel the equipment in a setting that is safe for them. It’s an exciting opportunity.
