“I like capturing a sunrise or sunset with its burst of colours”

This week, we’re looking at 56-year-old Tony Crawford’s favourite photos.

Tony, who is from Orford, likes to take pictures of sunrises and sunsets around Warrington and would love to take a few shots behind the scenes on a Star Trek film set.

When and why did you take up photography?

My interest in photography started when I was in my 40s, as a way of creating family memories when the children moved out and our family started to expand. I’m not an expert merely a novice who enjoys days out and trying to enjoy the world around me, capturing many different views, from my work travels or weekends away.

What do you love about taking pictures?

I like trying to capture a sunrise or sunset above the rooftops of Warrington or along the UK coastline, with its burst of colours. Sometimes I’m able to capture moments that disappear in the blink of an eye, like seeing a dragonfly up close as it sits in the sunshine. I love creating an image that can be enjoyed by other people in different parts of our town or country and I often send my photographs to our relatives who live in Australia and miss the cold winters and green hills.

Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?

Being in the countryside photographing nature is one of my favourite places to be especially with family. It’s fantastic to be able to capture the colours of nature or the grandchildren smiling, laughing and enjoying themselves in the great outdoors. I also enjoy sitting by the coast as the sun sets, watching the sky change.

What is your favourite subject matter and why?

Nature and landscapes seem to have become my main areas of interest. When I was travelling around the country for work, it started as a bit of sightseeing between shifts but then turned into a way of recording my travel memories of locations that I might not visit again. I photograph historical buildings, places in the countryside and sunsets.

What do you enjoy about being part of the Guardian Camera Club?

The club is a great way to share styles, settings and advice with no judgement from others. We all enjoy the same hobby but have different strengths and techniques while feeling part of a group. Sometimes it’s nice to look at a picture that speaks louder than words and appreciate it for a few moments.

If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?

I would like to be a photographer behind the scenes of a film in production, capturing the candid moments where actors practise lines and get into make-up, while watching the sets, scenery and effects being put together. We all see films on the big screen but we often want to see what’s going on behind the scenes and how things are put together. If it was a Star Trek film or series it would be perfect!
