OVER the past couple of weeks I have been reading about the uproar in relation to the new waste collection policy.

Although, I can appreciate the borough council has to look after the welfare of its employees, I do feel that the council is not looking after the people who actually pay their wages.

On a recent trip to visit my parents in Lincolnshire, I found that East Lindsey District Council had taken a more proactive approach to its issues on waste collection and more importantly recycling. My parents and I moved to Lincolnshire back in 1996 and were astounded that it did not offer a wheelie bin service but people had to place bin bags out on the street. Now 10 years on it has a better service that we are being offered in Warrington.

It has three bins in different colours, no different to ours, one for general waste, one for garden waste and one grey bin which is the same size as our current black bin which is classified as its recycling bin. In this bin you place papers, tins and plastic bottles unlike our blue bins where you can only place papers.

I understand the council's commitment to recycling and I am all for this, if, as many people have mentioned, it is made easy for the householders, and what easier way than to give us a bigger recycling bin which can hold all items which can be recycled. I know that in our household of only two people we generate a lot of tin cans and plastic bottles and if these could be placed in a bin located on our drive for recycling, I for one would be more than happy to do this.

I think the council should be trying to persuade people to recycle and not alienate them by refusing to collect bins which have the lids slightly open when this could be resolved by utilising the recycle bin more!
