DAVE Ramsbottom is simply wasting his time if he thinks supermarkets and local residents are going to act to curb the appearance of abandoned shopping trolleys (Guardian, August 10).

He needs to put himself in the place of a single parent who doesn't own a car and needs to transport the week's shopping back to an estate, poorly served by public transport.

Ever tried carrying 10 full bags of shopping Mr Ramsbottom, accompanied by two small children?

While the supermarkets are able to make a handsome profit they really won't care about losing a few odd trolleys in the housing estates of this town.

The real culprits are the Government and Warrington Borough Council.

Local authorities have powers to collect trolleys and impose small penalties on the supermarket owners but they really can't be bothered.

Abandoned shopping trolleys blight towns across the country and if the Government was interested enough it could legislate to impose heavy fines on supermarkets.

Large chains might then make more effort to promote their home delivery services and provide subsidised transport themselves.
