I WRITE in reference to David Eden’s letter and his comments concerning the 20mph speed limit on Long Lane.

There are two schools, one college, a business park and countless houses within a stones throw of Long Lane which means that at peak times there will be a great number of pedestrians on Long Lane and therefore a highly significant risk of a car hitting someone.

Now I know that in Mr Eden’s world the roads and pavements are the exclusive domain of the car drivers and that pedestrians, like cyclists and horse riders, should not be there.

But in the real world a number of responsible people who were elected to take care of the community have quite rightly introduced the 20mph zone to reduce the risk to pedestrians from the small number of irresponsible, mindless, moronic drivers who, like Mr Eden think it is more important to save 15 seconds than to be concerned about other people.

In conclusion I firmly believe that 20mph zones should be introduced into all urban areas because, as a responsible and careful driver, I would rather add 10 minutes to my journey than run the risk of killing a child.
