I HAVE no doubt that a great many people who voted Labour are now having second thoughts.

One who is not is clearly Geoffrey Brooking, who wrote in last week’s letters (Warrington Guardian, September 26).

Let’s just take his very last sentence of: “Labour is all action.”

Indeed it is, and its very first action was to deny winter fuel payments to ‘unqualified’ pensioners.

I think the only three people in this country who think this is a good idea are messers Starmer, Reeves and the idiot adviser who suggested pensioners would be an easy target.

He is the one who said: “The money could be better spent.”

If you can think of any better way of spending money other than helping old people stay alive, I would like to know.

How many did Labour say would die because of fuel poverty? I think its own number was 4,000.

Then Mr Brooking goes on to praise Yvette Cooper for tackling off-road bikes.

Unlike Mr Brooking, I had not realised that this, unlike the illegal boat people, was a national issue.

Not a peep from her on that one though.

Let me remind you, we were assured by two-tier Starmer before the election that all his departments would hit the ground running.

It turns out they are running on the spot, for we see no action whatsoever on the issue of illegal immigration.

There was a clue, however, at the Labour party conference, when to rapturous applause he accused those critical of the ‘boat people’ of being racist. The venue erupted.

It is an old political ploy – if you are incapable of solving an issue, turn it into a virtue. Blair was a dab hand at this strategy.

So Mr Brooking, when the bereaved families of the 4,000 pensioners are burying their loved ones, I have no doubt that they will all be comforted and consoled and feel safe in the knowledge that they will not be bothered by off-road bikes.

You could not make it up.
