YOUR article on Sankey Street really took me back.
As a young 10-year-old child in 1973, I have memories of going to the Carlton Club on Saturday mornings as my auntie was the cleaner there.
I can recall the narrow staircase up to the very dimly lit club, and the bar area at one end fascinated me.
Rows upon rows of drinks were lined up on the shelves, not locked away, and I would go behind the bar looking at all these different bottles.
Can you imagine having that kind of access now? How times have changed.
The state of the toilets after a Friday night in there ensured that my auntie certainly earned her wages.
Good memories though.

AS a child, I always loved Sankey Street.
My grandma would take me there weekly, and we would walk around Woolworths, where the toy department upstairs would be the highlight of my trip.
From what I can remember, my grandma used to pay weekly for my Christmas present, which was always a doll.
Sally and Mandy were my favourites, then downstairs for pick ‘n’ mix.
Then on a Saturday, my mum would take me to the old Marks and Spencer’s to get food for our tea.
I also remember Etams on the same side as Woolworths, where she would buy her hold ups.
I remember all the displays of ladies’ legs with different coloured flesh stockings.
Another shop I remember was Top Pic clothes shop
I have many happy memories of Sankey Street in the 1960s and 1970s
