ALLAN Ralston is a learned man. We know he is because he’s often told us. Erasmus, USA. He’s done it all.
However, once again, as many ‘Remainers’ do, he’s set out to use smoke and mirrors to discredit Brexit (Warrington Guardian, November 17).
He quite rightly points out that Boris’s Big Red Bus promised funds galore for the NHS. He’s right of course and nobody is denying that. He conveniently though forgets two very important facts.
First of all, he and his Remainers predicted mass unemployment, not over time but immediately the vote was cast. Nope, that didn’t happen; quite the opposite in fact.
Secondly, he must have been asleep, this last couple of years and the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine has clearly passed him by.
The cost, to the treasury, of the Covid furlough scheme was £70 billion. That would help pay for a lot of hospitals and doctors and nurses too. There’s an old saying about ‘cake and eat it’. It still holds true today.
Perhaps Allan, you’d have preferred it had the Government kept to its Big Red Bus pledge, funded the NHS, as promised and thrown millions out of work.
We are facing a global economic downturn but Remainers blame everything on Brexit.
Inflation across Europe (Google search) is running at over 11 per cent, with Germany alone, depending on which search engine you use, somewhere between 10.4 per cent and 11.6 per cent. Perhaps they’re suffering from Brexit too.
As for taking back control of our borders, this really is a difficult task, when one country, France, are actively encouraging the migration. Yes, we have a weak political will to stop them but that’s absolutely nothing to do with Brexit. It would be exactly the same under the two opposition parties.
Brexit is far from perfect but don’t blame it for all our ill, because that simply isn’t so.
