I very much enjoyed Jeremy Craddock’s column about Shakespeare (Warrington Guardian, October 29).
I envy his few days in Stratford and do hope he and his family can all get to a RSC production soon.
Many memories came back including seeing Paul Robeson (honest) as Othello with Sam Wanamaker as Iago.
I also remember fainting when Lear (Charles Laughton) put out Lancaster’s eyes, but I was five months pregnant at the time.
Lancaster was played by Cyril Luckham who we had seen in almost every repertory production at Liverpool Playhouse while he was there.
(I am sorry if these names mean little to you but I am in my second childhood.) Jeremy said what I have long been amazed by – the number of everyday phrases that the Bard used.
When one reads any passage they leap out from most pages.
I counted 22 references in Jeremy’s piece – quite an achievement.
Thank you for reminding me.
