What's the point in encouraging Warrington residents to recycle only to turn them away from the local tips when they try to recycle more!

I have just returned from a Sunday morning trip to my local tip: Gateworth in Sankey. I was recycling empty cans, plastic and glass bottles, only to find the glass recycling section was closed off.

When I asked one of the employees where I could dispose of the bottles, I was appalled when he told me to put them into the non-recyclable' waste skip.

I said that I had brought the bottles to be recycled and was promptly told that I had two choices - put them in the skip or take them back home as the bottle bank hadn't been emptied on Friday and was full.

As most people are likely to take a trip to their local tip at the weekend, how many other well-meaning citizens were given this inappropriate advice and more importantly, how many tonnes of glass went into the local landfill?

What makes this worse is that it isn't an isolated incident. My husband tells me this has happened before. It took him two weeks and several trips to the local tip to dispose of the excess Christmas waste as skips weren't emptied regularly enough!

Why can't Warrington Borough Council get its act together when it comes to recycling in the town?

If there are any MPs out there remotely interested in getting Warrington on the top of the recycling agenda, may I suggest they take a trip down to the local tips to sort this matter out urgently?
