As far as our health and fitness is concerned, the foods and drinks that we consume on a daily basis both play key roles in determining just how fit, or unfit, we actually are.
If a person were to consume greasy junk food, or processed, baked or frozen goods pumped full of chemical additives and ingredients it’s probably safe to assume that they wouldn’t be considered very fit or healthy.
On the flipside however, if they were to exercise regularly and eat plenty of healthy foods they would almost certainly be in good shape, both on the inside and outside too.
But what actually constitutes as healthy foo” and are some healthier than others?
Well, when we think of healthy foods we think of lean meats, fish, and fresh fruits and vegetables but some of these foods are far healthier than others, and are often referred to as superfoods as a result.
Here’s a look at a few superfoods you’re probably not getting enough of, and reasons why you should be.
Avocados
People see or hear the word 'fat' and they run screaming in the opposite direction. Ok, that’s a bit of an overreaction but they do tend to shy away from high fat foods.
There are however, healthy fats and unhealthy fats, and avocados are a great source of healthy fats.
They are also rich in a powerful antioxidant known as Glutathione, which has been proven to help block over 30 different types of carcinogens which can attack our cells and cause them to turn cancerous.
They’re also full of numerous vitamins and minerals, making them one of the healthiest foods on the planet. They also taste delicious too.
Blueberries
You may have heard blueberries being referred to as superfoods in the past, and for good reason too.
Blueberries contain powerful antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals which all benefit the body in numerous different ways.
They help strengthen and boost the immune system, they help to improve digestion, and they protect against numerous types of cancer.
They also contain very little fructose sugar, a sugar found naturally in all fruits.
Oily fish
Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines is rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
These fatty acids are so hugely beneficial for the body as they benefit it in a number of different ways.
They help improve brain function, they protect the joints and bones, they improve vision, skin and hair health, they improve circulation and internal organ function, and they even increase the metabolism so we burn more calories and have more energy as a result.
Studies have also found that omega 3 could protect against degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
Cooked tomatoes
I've made sure to include the word cooked in the sub-title because it is during the cooking process when tomatoes earn their superfood status.
During cooking tomatoes produce a powerful antioxidant known as lycopene which is what gives them their bright red colour.
Lycopene has been found to protect against free radicals which can damage our cells and cause cancer, meaning tomatoes are a fantastic anti-cancer food.
They are also rich in vitamins, A, C, and E and natural water.
