FORMER Warrington centre Larry Flood, whose death in Weymouth aged 73 was reported on our website a few days ago, was also a member of the successful Warrington ‘B’ team in the 1969/70 season.

Dubbed the “stars of the future” by the Warrington programme, the ‘B’ team won the Lancashire under 19s championship by beating Folly Lane Juniors of Manchester 16-0 in the final.

The final was played at Wilderspool as a curtain-raiser to the final home game of the season against Huyton and a blanket collection was held to pay for Folly Lane’s travelling expenses.

The ‘B’ team half-backs (Alan Shingler and Kenny Green) were outstanding and the team scored four tries through Dickenson, Fox, Dykes and Kelly, with Dickenson also kicking two goals. The ‘B’ team (pictured) could easily have won by a wider margin.

We would like to invite readers to tell us the first names of all the players and, better still, loan us the original photograph so that we can take a copy and add it to our archives.

Famously, Flood only made one appearance for the first team – at Rochdale Hornets in September 1976 – when a makeshift side pulled off a shock 21-14 win at the Athletic Grounds.

Even Warrington coach Alex Murphy was surprised.

He said: “Well, well, well! What a really remarkable result came our way at the Athletic Grounds last Sunday.

“I must confess that I really thought I’d seen most things in over 20 years of football but last Sunday’s performance proved me wrong again. After the match I simply said ‘congratulations and well done’ because whatever else I added was just not enough.

“From one to 13 the team was magnificent and on reflection I can’t recall a single knock-on from our lads throughout the whole 80 minutes. Yes, it was an excellent performance at Rochdale and I’ll go so far to say that if, and I repeat if, we are successful in the First Division then these two league points will be the main reason we are in contention.

“Very early in the match I noticed a considerable number of Warrington supporters on the far side of the ground chanting ‘loyal supporters’ and believe me it was great to see so many there and the lads really appreciated the encouragement.

“I would also like to officially place on record my thanks for the many offers of help we have received from the local amateur sides to assist us in our terrible injury plight. Thames Board, Latchford and Crosfields were spontaneous with their offers.”

The full Warrington team who defeated Rochdale was: Norman Turley; Eddie Hunter, Larry Flood, Ron Clark, Peter Taylor; Glen France, Colin Hart; John Earle, Chris Middlehurst, AN Other, Gary Fletcher, Mike Peers and Barry Philbin.

The trialist AN Other was Eddie Lyon and no substitutes were used. Norman Turley (2), Glen France (2) and Mike Peers scored the tries, with France also kicking three goals.
