WHILE insisting no decisions have yet been made regarding his team selection for Friday’s semi-final trip to Hull KR, Sam Burgess gave a pretty clear hint.

With no fresh injury concerns in his Warrington Wolves squad, he admitted changing the side that got them to this stage would be something of a wrench.

Saturday’s golden-point victory over St Helens – The Wire’s first play-off victory since 2018 – booked them a trip to Sewell Group Craven Park to face the Robins, who finished just ahead of them in second spot.

Long-term absentees such as Lachlan Fitzgibbon (shoulder), Leon Hayes (ankle) and Connor Wrench (ACL) among others remain unavailable, so Burgess will select from the same group of players for this latest season-defining test.

When asked about the condition of his players following Saturday’s game, the Wire boss said: “They’ve pulled up fine, but it was a pretty intense game and they’re still a bit battered and bruised.

“We’ve got all of the recovery going on at the moment so they will be ready to go.

“It’s just bumps and bruises at the moment – nothing drastic, which is good.”

And when asked if that meant fans could expect an unchanged 17, he replied: “We’re not sure yet, but it’s hard to change a winning team. We’ll have to wait and see.”

While Warrington were edging through a physical and hard-fought game against their neighbours, Friday’s opponents enjoyed a week off having earned the right to do so by finishing inside the top two.

However, Burgess says not much thought is being put into how much of a factor that will be.

“It will obviously have freshened them up,” he said.

“We had a tough game on Saturday afternoon while they sat and watched it, so it’s certainly an advantage.

“For us, it’s something we can’t really control. We knew it would be the case with finishing third and we accepted our journey through.

“We’ve got through the first step now and we’re looking forward to going up there and playing.”
