JOSH Drinkwater will leave Warrington Wolves at the end of the season, the club have confirmed.
It has long been expected that the Australian half-back would depart when his contract expires in November, with London Broncos half-back Oli Leyland seemingly set to arrive to take his place in next year’s squad.
How, the club have confirmed him as one of the departees who will be honoured during a post-match presentation following Friday’s clash with London Broncos.
The Wire confirmed John Bateman would return to Australia upon the expiry of his short-term deal, while fellow second-rower Matty Nicholson’s departure to join NRL side Canberra Raiders had already been confirmed.
Drinkwater has made 47 Warrington appearances to date since joining from Catalans Dragons ahead of last season, scoring five tries in the process.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my two seasons at the club and have met some of the best people in the game, from the owner Simon Moran through to the playing group and staff,” the 32-year-old said.
“I wish the club nothing but success in the years ahead and it’s been a pleasure playing for The Wire.”
Head coach Sam Burgess added: “Josh has been an integral part of our team and the way we play.
“He’s been great with his leadership with the younger players and at driving standards, especially with Leon (Hayes) and he competed hard with him during pre-season.
“We wish him all the best in his next endeavour. He’s left the place in great order.”
Prop Gil Dudson and winger Matty Russell will also depart, with the former having been confirmed to be joining newly-promoted Championship side Oldham for 2025.
Four more players are not mentioned among the club’s confirmed departures – forwards Max Wood and Tom Whitehead and outside backs Jake Thewlis and Wes Bruines.
Bruines, who has not featured for the club at any level since joining from St Helens in pre-season due to hamstring issues, and Thewlis, the younger brother of first-team star Josh, are both understood to have club options to extend their deals by another 12 months.
Wood and Whitehead, both of whom have featured extensively for the first team in 2024, are understood to be on the verge of signing extended deals.
