SAM Burgess will fly back to Australia in order to be inducted into the NRL's Hall of Fame in person.

However, he will be back in the country for Warrington Wolves' trip to Castleford Tigers on Friday night.

Last week, the Wire head coach was confirmed as one of 11 men to be inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2024 and becomes the first England international to take his place among some of the game's greats.

The formal inductions will be made at a special ceremony at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday and it has been confirmed that Burgess will attend in-person.

Assistant coaches Martin Gleeson and Richard Marshall will take charge of Warrington's preparations to face Castleford in Round 23 in Burgess' absence, with the head coach set to land back in the UK on Friday morning in time to take charge of the match.

On Wednesday, it was confirmed that Burgess - along with former Warrington players Les Boyd and Greg Inglis - was among those to enter the NRL Hall of Fame as part of this year's induction.

His glittering playing career with South Sydney Rabbitohs, with whom he won an NRL Premiership in 2014, earned him that distinction.

“What an amazing group of players,” Australian Rugby League Commision chairman Peter V’landys said.

“All different, all deserving in their own right.

“This list of players includes some of the toughest, the most talented, the greatest players of their generations.

“I’m in awe of this group of players and what they have each done in the game and for the game.

“This is the best of the best across several phenomenal eras. The group is full of Premiership winners, Dally M Medal winners, Clive Churchill Medal winners, Australia, New Zealand and England representatives.

“There are brilliant halves, powerful and durable forwards and gifted outside backs. All of these players are exceptional.”
