NEARLY 18 months after retiring from the sport, Jake Mamo is back in British rugby league.

And the former Warrington Wolves centre, who became a popular figure among supporters during his three seasons at the club, returns in the lower leagues having joined Midlands Hurricanes.

It means the 30-year-old will spend the remainder of the campaign playing in the third tier of the British game, but he says he's excited to be back involved.

“I’m really excited to join the Hurricanes and play some rugby again after a couple of years off," said the man who helped The Wire lift the Challenge Cup in 2019.

"I’ve been following them closely for the past couple of years and its great to see rugby league growing in the Midlands, so it’s exciting to be a part of this.

"We’re coming to the important end of the season now so hopefully I can help out with the push into the playoffs over the next few weeks and beyond."

Having joined from Huddersfield Giants in 2019, Mamo's utility value came in handy for then head coach Steve Price as he occupied positions all across the back line.

However, his best season in primrose and blue proved to be his last - having nailed down a spot in the centres, he topped the club's try-scoring charts with 17 touchdowns in 23 appearances during the 2021 season.

He joined Castleford Tigers after totalling 29 tries in 56 Warrington appearances, but he announced his retirement from the game early in 2023 due to a succession of back and head injuries.
