WARRINGTON Wolves have withdrawn from the race to sign Rhyse Martin.

The Warrington Guardian understands that, having tabled an offer for the Leeds Rhinos second-rower for next year, The Wire have now decided to move onto other targets and as things stand, their pursuit of Martin is at an end.

The Papua New Guinea international is now set to choose between extending his spell at Headingley into a seventh season having joined in 2019 or move across the Pennines to join Leigh Leopards, who had been thought to be in pole position to secure his signature.

Warrington are still actively looking for a back-rower to replace Matty Nicholson, whose move to the NRL with Canberra Raiders for next year has now been officially confirmed, but they are understood to be relaxed about the situation.

They are keen to give academy product Adam Holroyd as much chance as possible to stake a claim for a more permanent first-team role while fellow youth products Tom Whitehead and Nolan Tupaea have also been earmarked for increased involvement.

The Wire are set to have an overseas quota spot at their disposal in their pursuit of new additions, with scrum-half Josh Drinkwater set to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract in November.

However, as head coach Sam Burgess revealed this week, part of the reason for Drinkwater’s likely departure is salary cap pressures, with several of the club’s existing players having signed upgraded contracts this year.

As of now, Warrington have no confirmed signings for 2025 after Luke Yates’ move from Huddersfield Giants was brought forward to take effect immediately.
