IT was not just the Warrington Wolves first team in action at the weekend.

There were also fixtures for the women’s and reserves sides, with both unfortunately ending in defeat for The Wire.

Here’s more about how both sides got on…

Wire’s women beaten by defending champions

Reigning Betfred Women’s Super League champions York Valkyrie had too much firepower as they ran out 44-4 winners against a plucky Wire side at the LNER Community Stadium.

It was a hat-trick midway through the first half for winger Eboni Partington that took the game away from The Wire, who had been matching their hosts in defence and attack until that point.

They had even levelled the scores when, on the back of Emily Baggaley’s charge-down of a kick, a strong Abi Johnston run led to a smart offload from Baggaley for Charlize Magraw to tie up the scores at 4-4 on 14 minutes after Lacey Owen had given York an early lead.

However, Partington’s treble and a further try from Bettie Lambert put York out into a lead that would prove too much to come back from.

Alex Stimpson and Liv Wood then crossed for the Valkyrie either side of a period of Wire pressure that did not lead to points before a late Manugalo Komaitai double added gloss to the scoreline.

Armani Sharrock’s side are next in action on Saturday, June 15, when they travel to Featherstone Rovers.

Wolves: Rebecca Nixon; Abigail Johnston, Nicole Barnett, Sammi Simpson, Albany Coates; Millie Bell, Charlize Magraw; Abigail Latchford, Jasmine Wilson, Grace Burnett, Katie May Williams, Emily Baggaley, Helena Turner. Subs: Ellie Jelves, Lucy Johnson, Megan Condliffe, Louise Fellingham. 18th: Lauren Ellison

Reserves ‘threw the game away’ in nightmare first half

Before Saturday’s Super League game between the clubs, Warrington and Wigan’s reserve teams faced off at Victoria Park.

And it was a game that was effectively over quickly, with the hosts going 24-0 down inside a nightmare opening quarter and trailing 30-0 at the break as Ryan Brown, Tom Ratchford, Harry Higham, Finlay Yeomans and Finlay Irwin all touched down for Wigan.

The second half saw something of a fightback, with James Duffy crossing twice to go with further tries from Ewan Smith, Scott Parnaby and Jamie Reddecliff as Wire won the second half 22-4, with Higham’s second try being Wigan’s only score.

However, reserves head coach Ryan O’Brien said the second-half showing actually made the performance as a whole “even more disappointing” and says what he saw “will not be tolerated.”

“Ultimately, we threw the game away in the first quarter, going 24-0 down in as many minutes,” he said.

“It was a disgraceful start and the performance during that period was absolutely nowhere near the standard we set or expect at this club.

“The fact we got our act together for the remainder of the game was actually even more disappointing because it clearly shows the problem lay in the players’ attitude and application rather than their ability.

“That simply will not be tolerated.”

The next reserves fixture sees the team host Salford Red Devils on Saturday, June 15.
