WHILE full details are still being awaited, Sam Burgess admits Leon Hayes' injury "is not looking very good at all."

He confirmed the half-back had suffered "at least a dislocation" of his ankle during the second half of the defeat at Salford Red Devils, but that he had spoken to him on the phone having been taken to hospital.

The young scrum-half went down following an innocuous-looking tackle in the second half at the Salford Community Stadium.

Medical staff were quickly urged onto the field by players and after a lengthy delay, Hayes was stretchered off but did acknowledge supporters' applause as he was taken from the field.

At present, he is awaiting the results of scans and X-rays but Burgess has confirmed he faces "a long time on the sidelines."

"It’s not a great one for him. It’s a tough injury," he said in his post-match press conference.

"We don’t know the full extent yet, but it’s not great – it’s not looking very good at all.

"I’ve spoken to him on the phone and he’s in good spirits – he’s probably more disappointed with the loss, if I’m honest, which shows a lot about his character.

"I’m gutted for him but that’s sport."

When asked if the injury looks set to end Hayes' season, Burgess replied: "I’m no doctor but he’s in hospital now and is awaiting scans and X-rays, but it’s pretty clear there’s quite a bit of damage there.

"It’s definitely a dislocation and it looks as though it could be a fracture.

"It’s not looking good so it could be a long time on the sidelines for him. It's a tough night for everyone."
