SAM Burgess’ involvement with the England camp ahead of Sunday’s first Test with Tonga has simply whetted Matty Ashton’s appetite for more.
The Wire winger, not selected for the opening game of the series, said Burgess was inspirational when he turned up to the camp on Saturday night to make the shirt presentation to those players facing Tonga in St Helens.
It is something he will be able to get used to, with Burgess starting a two-year contract with Warrington in his first role as a head coach.
“It was a privilege to listen to him,” said Warrington’s 2023 top try scorer Ashton, who gained his first senior cap in the mid-season international against France.
“He’s a very motivational leader, from what I’ve heard from some of the boys, and his speech on Saturday night really hit home.
“I’m really looking forward to getting to work with him.”
Despite not being selected for the Test in St Helens, Ashton said he is enjoying his time with the England camp and is on a learning experience.
“I’m honoured. It’s been pretty surreal getting to train with the boys every day,” Ashton told the BBC.
“It’s been really good for me, listening to some of the leaders and some of the players who have been around the camp for years. I’m really enjoying it.”
