WARRINGTON Wolves have confirmed Sam Burgess’ second signing since becoming head coach for next year.

Young centre Wesley Bruines has signed a 12-month deal to join the club from St Helens, with The Wire holding the option to extend that deal by a further year.

Bruines worked under Burgess during his time in the development pathways at South Sydney Rabbitohs, where he played having moved to Australia at the age of 18.

The 20-year-old then returned to England to join Saints ahead of this season but is yet to make a senior appearance for the club – he was named on the bench during Saints’ win over Warrington in April but did not make it onto the field.

Despite that, however, Bruines is intent on proving himself worthy of a spot in Warrington’s team for next year.

“Warrington’s a big club and I’m excited for the opportunity,” he said.

“I know Sam [Burgess] from my time in Australia. He explained his vision of what he wants to do with the club and how he wants to develop me as a player.

“It’s a great stadium and a good atmosphere here at Warrington. It’s going to be a big pre-season for me and hopefully I can put my name out there to compete for a starting shirt.”

Before heading to Australia, Bruines came through the academy system at Wakefield Trinity and represented England Lions at youth level.

He now becomes the third confirmed new signing for 2024, with Papua New Guinea international centre Rodrick Tai and Newcastle Knights back-rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon also joining the club.

“Wes is someone Sam has worked with during his time at Souths,” director of rugby and current interim head coach Gary Chambers said.

“He’s a talented young player that we believe will develop with us.

“He can play centre as well as wing and full-back so will add that extra layer of competition as well as complementing what we’ve already got.”

Burgess added: “Wes will be a great addition to our squad for next season.

“He will bring a great work ethic, skill and youth to our playing group.”
