DARYL Powell confirmed Warrington Wolves have been looking to secure a return on loan for prop Thomas Mikaele.
With the recruitment deadline looming, however, he was unable to say with any confidence whether he feels the deal will be done in time.
Having started the season in fine form by scoring three tries in seven games, Mikaele cut his Wire contract short in April to return home to Australia for family reasons.
He joined NRL side Gold Coast Titans but since then, he has played just one first-grade game and as such, there have been discussions about bringing the 25-year-old back to England on a short-term basis until the end of the season.
When asked about the chances of Mikaele rejoining the club, Powell said: "It’s something we’ve been talking about behind the scenes for a few months.
"I don’t know where it’s at, but it would be pretty good to have him back.
"I can’t give you any real information on it, but we know Tommy and he knows us.
"It would be a perfect fit but whether it actually happens or not, I couldn’t give you any information on it."
Last week, The Wire confirmed the signing of utility forward Jordan Crowther on a short-term deal from Wakefield Trinity.
He is ineligible to make his debut against his former club on Sunday but would have been considered an injury doubt regardless as he recovers from a calf issue.
Clubs have until August 4 to register players for the remainder of the season and while he confirmed efforts to do so would continue following the losses of Mikaele and Josh McGuire earlier in the year, Powell stopped short of expressing confidence any business would be done.
"I don’t think you can be confident at the moment looking at what’s happening in the competition and overseas," he said.
"I wouldn’t say I’m confident of something happening but we’ve been looking now since we lost those two boys.
"Jordan Crowther’s come in and fitted in pretty well straight away, but we’ll wait and see."
