WARRINGTON Wolves’ Scholarship side got a chance on the big stage on Wednesday night.

Their game against Hull FC was moved from Victoria Park to The Halliwell Jones Stadium, but Paul Berry's charges could not mark the occasion by recording a fifth victory in six games.

They looked on track to do so as they led 24-12 inside the final minutes, but two Spencer George tries including one on the final hooter allowed the visitors to leave with a 24-24 draw.

It was the first time an under 16s side has got to play at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, and Berry was delighted his players got such a chance.

"I've got to thank the club for making it happen and hopefully we see the Scholars on there again before to long," he said.

"It was a great experience for them."

With both sides having enjoyed periods of pressure in the opening exchanges, including Wire being held up over the line twice in as many plays, it was the visitors who opened the scoring.

Having forced an error deep inside the Warrington half, position was set up for scrum-half Josh Horne to dummy through the line and power his way over.

However, the Wire youngsters’ response was swift when, having threatened to break through the line two plays previous, centre Bobby Tyerman crossed following a neat short-side move.

Soon, they were ahead when following the latest in a number of huge carries from prop Isaac Holdsworth, Wire number seven Thomas Rhodes spotted a gap in the line and like his opposite number had previously done, sold the defence a dummy to race through it and score.

Wire then had a Samuel Dickenson try ruled out for instruction before Hull struck back to level the scores going into the break, with winger Kirils Prigorkins rising highest to claim a kick to his wing and race around to make for an easy conversion.

The game was there to be grabbed and after the break, Warrington made their move.

Leyton Haddrell scored a typical dummy-half try shortly after the restart to put the hosts into the lead, and now it was up to them to cement it.

Having had a try ruled out on one wing for a forward pass, they eventually did on the other as Cameron Cooper acrobatically flew over after a superb kick chase forced a drop-out to get them onto the attack.

However, the visitors were in no mood to go quietly and when Spencer George crashed over to cut Wire's lead in half, a grandstand finish looked to be in store.

All of a sudden, the hosts were in survival mode and it now became a question of whether they could hang on.

The answer, unfortunately, was no as George powered over again in the final seconds to ensure an entertaining encounter finished all-square.

"That was real test for our squad tonight," Berry said post-match.

"Hull FC were big across the park but we rolled our sleeves up and matched them physically, which was really pleasing to see.

"Our execution with the ball was the best it's been all season and we scored some really nice tries and came really close a couple more times.

"We were probably in control and on top for majority of the game and we'll learn loads from that last 15 minutes where we let our foot off the gas and let FC back into the game with a couple of really soft barge overs to level the scores."
