IT is difficult to imagine the weekend going any better for go-kart racer Jake Anders.
Not only did the 14-year-old from Burtonwood become British champion in his home town, but he set a new lap record at the TeamSport Warrington track in the process.
In what has been described as the best ever British Indoor Karting Championship junior final – one that dad Phillip admitted he could not bare to watch – Jake held off reigning champion Bobby McGirr in an epic race to be crowned champion on his home track.
Having put his cart on pole for the final, he had a comfortable three-second lead over his rivals but was slowed down by the need for a “joker lap,” meaning every driver had to perform a pit stop.
That meant he had been caught by the second-placed racer with four laps to go but when he then took his stop, it left Anders and McGirr to battle it out for three laps, with the former holding off sustained attacks to take the chequered flag.
“It was an epic day, we really appreciate all the support we’ve received,” proud Dad Phillip said.
“I never watched the final as I was that nervous – I stood in the back ally in the dark until the race was over and watched it on the live stream soon as I got home.
“We really hope this can raise Jake’s profile and gain us the sponsorship we desperately seek to progress further up the ranks.”
Anders had led from start to finish in all three of his races before the final but was at his most impressive in the second heat – a race he won by 14 seconds while setting a new TeamSport Warrington lap record of 50.985secs.
