A SECOND Warrington runner has won a medal at the World Masters Athletics Championships.

Warrington Athletics Club’s Steve Watmough clinched a bronze medal in the 60-64 age group of the half marathon which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Saturday.

All age groups over 35 and up started together and Watmough finished in 124th place overall in 1hr 22mins 55secs.

In his age group he was behind gold-medal winner John Meagher (Australia) 1hr 17mins 51secs and Massimo Ribetto (Italy) 1hr 22mins 28secs.

The previous weekend, Warrington Athletics Club’s Julie Hicken ran the anchor leg of the British 4x100m relay team that won silver at the World Masters Athletics Championships track events that took place at Slottsskogsvallen Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Meanwhile, Warrington Athletics Club’s under 15 competitor Alfie Blizzard took on older runners in a mixed 800m race in the North Wales Endurance Open Meeting.

He was in last place after 400m which he reached in 61secs but fought back to finish fifth in 2mins 06.99secs.

He was the youngest in the field with all the rest being under 17s or under 20s athletes.
