LEWIS Shaw underlined his status as one to watch in the world of athletics by claiming another national title over the weekend.

Following his victories at the English Schools and the SIAB Schools International, the Warrington Athletics Club hurdler claimed gold at the English Athletics Under 15 – Under 17s Championships in Birmingham.

He equalled his personal best 100m hurdles time of 12.94secs in the final – slightly quicker than his semi-final winning time of 12.96secs – to secure first place having earlier won his heat comfortably in 13.41secs.

Shaw was not the only Warrington AC member to come home from Birmingham with a medal, with Olivia Crawford winning silver in the under 15s 75m hurdles.

Having set a new personal best of 11.20secs to win her heat, she placed second in her semi-final in 11.58secs before clocking 11.29secs in the final.

Second-claim member Evie Elliot also made the final in the under 17s 300m but was hampered by a slight injury and finished seventh in 49.56secs having qualified by finishing third in her heat in 47.05secs.

Earlier in the championships, Esme Heavey placed eighth in her under 17s 1,500m final in a time of 4mins 38.37secs.

Lewis and Olivia’s coach at the Victoria Park-based club, Neal Petley, was also in national championships action over the weekend as he and clubmate Julie Hicken took part in the British Masters Championships in Derby.

Unfortunately, he just missed out on a 100m medal in the 55-59 age group after placing equal fourth alongside Ireland’s Aidan O’Donoghue in 21.16secs.

Hicken was among the medals over the same distance, however, as she claimed bronze in the women’s 60-64 age group in 14.98secs before adding a silver medal the following day in the 200m, with her time of 30.51secs being her fastest ever as a masters athlete and a new Northern Masters record for her age group.

Warrington AC under 15s athlete Tallie Sze was the club’s other medallist this weekend as she made sure she returned from a holiday back to her homeland of Hong Kong with two extra pieces of hand luggage.

She competed in the TCAA Championships at the Tsing Yi Sports Ground and claimed a gold medal in the long jump having leapt 4.98m before a 200m run of 27.11secs saw her win bronze.

Closer to home, there was an age-group victory for Louise Blizzard at the Birkenhead Park 5-mile road race – she won the women’s 40-49 age group thanks to her time of 33mins 39secs, which was the fifth-fastest women’s time and placed her 92nd overall.

Under 15s athlete Oliver Davenport enjoyed a successful 5km road race debut on Saturday at the Run Through Tatton Park event, placing third overall in an impressive time of 18mins 17secs.

Masters runner Steve Burthem was in action in the third Harrock Hill race of four near Parbold, placing 48th overall and fourth in the over 60s age group by clocking 45mins 33secs.
