Warrington Athletics Club enjoys a busy Bank Holiday

Many juniors competed twice, including on home soil at the club’s Junior Open Hurdles Festival at Victoria Park on Saturday before the club had a strong representation at Trafford AC’s medal meeting on Monday.

On Saturday, Olivia Crawford won both of her under 15s 75m hurdles races in the exact same time – 11.59secs – but her second time was more impressive given it was into a 2.7m per second wind. That figure was down at 1.7 in her first outing.

UK number one Lewis Shaw was a comfortable winner of the under 17s men’s 100m hurdles in 13.80secs while in the same age group, second-claim member Evie Elliot came second over 80m in 13.08secs.

There were personal bests galore for the under 13s girls – Leah Poole won the 100m race in 14.27secs while behind her, Lula Ashworth finished fourth in a new best time of 15.17secs. Leah also finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 3.67m.

In a separate 100m heat, Nora Szekely was fourth in 16.47secs while she also placed sixth in the javelin with a personal best throw of 7.43m.

Charlotte Andrew took more than 11 seconds off her 800m personal best, clocking 3mins 4.72secs to come home seventh.

Rosie Carters won the first under 11s girls 75m heat in a personal-best 11.60secs – the third-fastest time over the three heats to earn her a bronze medal. Betsy Copplestone (13.19secs) finished sixth in the same heat.

Heat Two saw Pippa Beer (13.13secs) finish fifth just ahead of Jessica Treagust (sixth, 13.90secs) while Leila McGann (12.98secs) was fifth in Heat Three. Jessica also finished ninth in the long jump (2.38m).

In the 600m, Ivy Davidson just missed out on a medal despite taking more than seven seconds off her personal best by producing a late surge to finish second in Heat Two in 2mins 5.94secs.

The first heat saw Ettie Rashud (2mins 15.17secs) finish fourth while Betsy Copplestone (2mins 16.62secs) and Jessica Treagust (2mins 39.93secs) finished sixth and ninth respectively.

There was plenty to celebrate for the under 11s boys, with all bar one of the club’s competitors in the 600m race setting personal-best times.

Alfie Furnival finished second in a new best time of 1min 55.93secs, just ahead of Alex Farrell in third (1min 59.79secs).

Leonard Broadhurst (fourth, 2mins 1.45secs) just missed out on a medal and was followed home by Luke Horman (seventh, 2mins 17.59secs), Oscar Bering (eighth, 2mins 18.7secs) and Samuel Gibbons (10th, 2mins 33.06secs) with all four recording new personal bests.

Luke Horman won the soft javelin with a throw of exactly 15 metres while Daniel Sutton (9.64m) finished fifth, the same place as he finished the long jump having leapt 1.97m.

Oscar Bering (14.02secs) finished seventh in the 75m, one place ahead of Samuel Gibbons (eighth, 14.66secs).

In the youngest age group – the under 9s – Ffion Lawton was just two hundredths of a second off her 600m personal best as she ran 2mins 51.02secs but did win her first medal in the soft javelin with a throw of exactly six metres.

In the same age group, Alice Kerr came fifth in her 75m heat in 15.67secs.

Meanwhile, six of the seven Warrington athletes competing at Trafford on Monday came home with new personal bests, with many of the races seeing boys and girls compete alongside one another.

Rosie Carters came fourth in the first under 11s 75m heat in a new best time of 11.44secs, just pipping Tristan Tickle (fifth, 11.45secs PB). In the other heats, Leonard Broadhurst (third, 12.97secs) and Daniel Kelly (fourth, 12.58secs) also lowered their best times.

Rosie and Tristan again raced each other in the 150m heats, with Rosie in fourth (22.42secs) again pipping Tristan in sixth (22.81secs) with both recording personal bests while Leonard won the sixth heat in a personal best 25.46secs.

Tristan also competed in the long jump and placed 1th in Pool Two with a jump of 2.52m while Daniel Kelly was the only under 11 athlete in Pool Three and he leapt 2.50m on his long jump debut.

In the 600m heats, Seb Hughes won Heat Three in a personal best time of 1min 58.20secs while Daniel Kelly came home third in 2mins 4.87secs, which was also his best time.

Earlier, Alex Farrell had recorded a new best time of 1min 53.83secs to place third in Heat One.

In the under 17s age group, Ellie Barker won her 300m heat in a season’s best electronic time of 43.09secs.

Elsewhere, masters athlete Steve Burthem competed in the gruelling Coniston Fell Race in the Lake District over a 14km course that featured more than 1,000m of climbing on Saturday.

Competing for second-claim club Spectrum Striders, he came 148th overall in a time of 2hours 7mins 41secs to place 12th in the over 60s age group.

The club also had two members – Lisa Halliday and Rebecca Hardy – competing at the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Athletics Championships in Manchester over the weekend.

Running for Liverpool University, Halliday ran a season’s best time of 66.42secs in her 400m hurdles heat to finish fourth and qualify for the semi-finals, where she finished eighth and missed out on the final but still lowered her season’s mark again to 65.37secs.

Hardy, who was competing for the University of Birmingham, battled through a foot injury to finish sixth in her 100m hurdles heat in 15.18secs, which meant she missed out on a place in the final.
