A WARRINGTON racer became a British champion at the weekend.
Bridgewater High School student Eskild Hewitt, 12, steered his way to victory in astonishing style in the cadets section of the British Indoor Karting Championships staged on the refurbished TeamSport circuit at Bank Quay Trading Estate off Slutcher’s Lane.
He crossed the line 6.5 seconds clear of his nearest rival, which is a huge margin in the sport.
Not a bad achievement for a driver who has only been karting for a year and went through to the weekend’s final after winning the local and regional competitions.
And in a huge testament to the Warrington karting scene, fellow TeamSport driver Nyall Bill finished runner-up as a wildcard entry and 10-year-old Locking Stumps Primary School student James Vout finished fourth overall, just missing out on the podium.

As for other Warrington races involved, 13-year-old Burtonwood driver Jake Anders – the current lap record holder at TeamSport Warrington – came 10th in the junior final.
Although he qualified second in the heat he picked up penalties so it meant he started the final in 15th. Jake made five overtakes to finish 10th and he had the fastest lap in the final.
Culcheth High School’s Charlie France was the youngest in that category and narrowly missed the cut, finishing ninth in his semi-final.
There will be more action to come for James and Jake over the next two weekends.
James has the last rounds of other championships he is contesting – the Cadet Kart Racing Club at Three Sisters, Wigan, where he is already champion with one round to go, as well as the Hooton Park Indikart Clubman Championship and the Club100 National Cadet Super Lightweight Championship in which positions are still up for grabs.
Jake will be competing in the national final of the Global Karting League on December 2. He is leading going into the last round.
