TWO members of Woolston Karate Clubs are celebrating success.
Ruby Owen and Darron Mcquillan have made their mark in the 2023 Karate Welsh League, which featured six events between February and November held in Merthyr Tydfil.
Second-dan black belt and Cardinal Newman High School student Ruby, 14, from Woolston was crowned under 14s and under 16s double kata (patterned moves) champion.
She also finished third overall in under 14s kumite (fighting).
It has been Ruby’s best year for results, with 26 medals in all competitions.
Fifth-dan black belt Darron, 58, who is head coach of Woolston Karate Clubs, took part in the over 40s veteran kata in which he finished second overall.
He said it was a hard event considering some of the people he was up against were a lot younger than me.
These results cap the best year’s results for the club, with 10 squad members winning 74 medals between them.
Woolston Karate Clubs run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at Woolston CE Primary School. For more information contact 07956 419917.
