WARRINGTON’S Rhiannon Dixon is the new European lightweight champion after a stunning victory against Katharina Thanderz at Wembley.
The 27-year-old from Great Sankey was the clear winner on points with all three judges at the end of her first 10-round contest, coming against the Norwegian former world title contender.
All three scorecards were marked 100-90 in Dixon’s favour as she built on her Commonwealth title success in March and took her comparatively young professional career record to nine wins from nine bouts.
Observers were impressed with the bodyshot work, hand speed and fitness of the Anthony-Crolla trained former St Gregory’s High School student, who has fast become tagged as the fighting pharmacist from her work at Whiston Hospital.
There was the smile of a Cheshire cat upon her face when Dixon’s arm was raised in the ring.
“I can’t believe it,” said Dixon afterwards.
“I think it’ll sink in tomorrow when I wake up and go ‘Oh my God, I’m the European champion’. I’m just ecstatic.”

Dixon became ex-world champion Crolla’s first title winner when she lifted the Commonwealth crown six months ago and he continues to enjoy her progress.
“I’m unbelievably proud of the girl and I said it to her in the ring,” said Crolla.
“It was her toughest fight so far, on paper, but I thought she handled it very well.”
