WARRINGTON’S Lucy Glover was a medal winner in Switzerland as she helped Great Britain lift the overall 2023 World Rowing Cup title at the weekend.
The former Lymm High School student, who represents both Warrington Rowing Club and Edinburgh University when competing internationally, clinched silver with the GB women’s quadruple sculls crew in Lucerne.
It was one of nine medals won as GB topped the table at the end of the third and final round of the World Cup series.
Glover, 24, headed to Lucerne expecting to compete in the women’s single sculls but a late change put her back in the boat in which she has built her career and in which she became an Olympian in Tokyo two years ago.
The quad crew has been chopped and changed over the past couple of months but Glover found herself in the starting line-up for this important event, which is a dress rehearsal for the World Championships taking place in Belgrade in September.
Her crew had a smooth ride into Sunday’s final and they found themselves racing strong boats from Holland, Switzerland and the Olympic champions China.
The Dutch set off at a blistering pace and were pursued by the Chinese, with GB and Switzerland vying for bronze.
In the final 200m, GB managed to sprint for a place on the podium leaving the Swiss and Chinese in their wake but they were just pipped by the Dutch for the gold.
This is a significant result as it was the first time that China has been beaten since the Tokyo Olympics.
On the domestic front, Warrington Rowing Club sent their masters squad to compete at Button Regatta on the River Trent.
Three crews competed and the master D crew of Alasdair Elder, Ben Dunne, Jon Budd and Adam Lumley defeated Devils Elbow Rowing Club in a close contest.
At the other end of the age scale, the club’s junior 13s and 14s were competing on the River Weaver at The Ball Cup North, tackling round-robin races against north west clubs.
There were gold medals for the 14s girls quad made up of Jasmine Dunne, Ruby Wells, Lilly Colebrook, Maise Seed and cox Lily May-Kelly.
Joining them on the top step of the podium were Freya Coley and Florence Richardson who triumphed in the 13s girls singles.
The 13s boys quad of Eben Oaks, Korben Ince, Qasim Mahmood, Laurence Wainwright - coxed by Adrian Barrett McGuinness - secured an excellent silver in their first ever competition.
