DARREN Ashley has explained how he hopes Warriors of Warrington swimmers will have benefited from training in the Canary islands.
A group of competitors from the club, ranging from age 10 to 17, spent a week in sunny Fuerteventura on an immersive sports development camp, with each swimmer clocking up between 55km and 63km over the course of the week.
After dominating the Cheshire County Championships earlier this year, head coach Ashley took the group abroad to take their training to the next level.
“We took 41 swimmers to the warm weather training camp, to allow them the best opportunity for success leading into the British trials in April and then the national championships in the summer," he said.
"This experience will hopefully be the foundation for more swimmers to qualify for nationals within the qualifying window.”
During their down-time the swimmers were able to take advantage of what Fuerteventura has to offer, including learning to surf, playing games of beach volleyball and crazy golf.
Those taking part were chaperoned by parent volunteers, with the trip supported by key sponsors, while the swimmers also managed to raise over £12,000 themselves to help fund the trip.
This was done through a variety of activities such as a car boot sale, ice cream sales at school, cake sales at a local salon as well as a virtual spin challenge at LiveWire.
Parents can contact Darren Ashley at headcoach@swimwarriors.org.uk if they would like their child to develop their competitive swimming with Warriors, who train at Livewire Orford Jubilee and Woolston Hubs in Warrington.
