AFTER two years of Covid-related postponements, the Culcheth Cup Walking Football tournament is back.

Around 200 players from 19 teams took part in the returning charity competition last month, including four “home” teams from Culcheth itself – Walkers, Strollers, Amblers and Wanderers – to join sides from around the north west and North Wales.

After group stages and knockout rounds, Culcheth Walkers made it to the final where they were beaten by Bolton’s Arena Wanderers, who won all seven of their matches by an aggregate score of 29-0.

Walking football is a growing sport among the over 50s – a small-sided version of the game in which running is not allowed.

By way of sponsorship, competing teams and local companies raised more than £4,000 for The Christie cancer hospital in Manchester.

Having started five years ago, Culcheth Walking Football Club now has more than 50 members that meet on Tuesday evenings at Culcheth High School.
