WARRINGTON’S first canoe slalom Olympian Johny Akinyemi is out of the kayak competition.
He needed a strong second run of less than 94.4 seconds to stand a chance of being one of the last 15 in the semi finals but a 52-second penalty for missing troublesome gate 12 put an end to his London 2012 today.
The 23-year-old from Longbarn, representing his father’s birth country Nigeria, was first on the course at the Lee Valley White Water Centre.
A couple of penalty points pushed the former Culcheth High School pupil’s time to 104.70secs and at the end of heat one he was lying 20th.
With only the best run counting, Akinyemi had a second shot to break into the top 15 but the anguish on his face was heartbreaking after he missed gate 12 on his second run and he finished on 146.95secs.
Akinyemi started the sport with Warrington Canoe Club.
