NO-NONSENSE Warrington Wolves forward Ben Westwood is willing to play through the pain barrier for the rest of the season.

The gritty Yorkshireman played his part in only Wolves' third win in 10 outings against Harlequins on Saturday despite his training regime having been wrecked recently.

He wants to finish the season on a high and cannot bear the thought of being sidelined with a knee complaint at the business end of the campaign.

Immediately after Saturday's victory the 25-year-old received a cortisone injection to hopefully help the healing process ahead of Wolves' next game with Leeds Rhinos on September 1.

He said: "I've only trained three times in the last four weeks and I've just been turning up to play really, but it is getting harder and harder for me to do that.

"You need to keep your fitness ticking over and I haven't been able to do that - and maybe it was because I was a bit tired that I came off against Harlequins.

"I've had the cortisone in my knee because, with us having a week off this week, hopefully it will help my knee to heal a bit better for the Leeds game.

"I originally banged it in the defeat at Castleford at the beginning of July. It just swelled up after the game.

"It wasn't as bad then but it seems to be getting worse.

"Every time I have banged it or it has touched the floor it has swollen up really badly, leaving me unable to run on it.

"That has left me not being able to train during a week in order to get the swelling down and then having a painkilling injection before a game to numb the knee so that I cannot feel it during the game."

Ahead of the Harlequins clash head coach Paul Cullen said Westwood had been brave to play on with the injury.

And the former Wakefield centre said: "Yeah, definitely, very brave! It does really hurt, it's really sore afterwards and for most of the week leading up to a game but the injection takes that away.

"Unfortunately, the pain killer only lasts for about 65 to 70 minutes and so for the last 10 minutes I'm in agony.

"But we'll get it right. I just want to get through until the end of the season and then I'll probably have something done with it at the end of the year.

"I simply don't want to miss out on any games for the rest of the year.

"I want to be in a winning team and I couldn't bear it if the team won something while I wasn't playing."
