LYMM Rugby Club’s under 17s team are a fine example of what can be achieved in 12 months.

They turned a campaign that ended with a crisis meeting into one that yielded a stunning four-trophy haul and saw them crowned the top junior colts side in the country.

Noel Wright’s boys become the first northern side to win the National under 17s RFU Cup and also added the Cheshire Cup, the Northern Divisional Junior Colts Cup and the Halbro North West Junior Colts League A title.

Lymm defeated Premiership club side Worcester and national league club side Exeter to secure their national glory.

Wright said: “Last season at under 16s level, with players playing on county duty we had less than a full team to fulfil our fixtures.

“Prior to then we had won the county cup at five different age levels.

“At the end of last year we had a crisis meeting to decide on whether we should continue as a team or disband. We had 17 players and decided to carry on and go down fighting.

“The season started against Penrith, a side we had never played before, and were beaten 26-19 at home.

“Early after the season started we were joined by five new players giving us just enough numbers to cope with the rigours of the fixture list.

“We were only beaten once more all season, by Caldy 16-19 at home when we had been 16-0 up at half time.

“Those two defeats set us up for the season and helped us to achieve what we have achieved.

“It’s a stunning achievement that a small Cheshire village side takes on the mighty Premiership sides and wins the National Cup to be the best junior colts side in the country.”
