FORMER Warrington Wolves player and referee Arthur Fryer died on Friday at the age of 78.

Fryer, who lived in Latchford, made his Warrington debut in a 21-17 win against Australia at Wilderspool in October, 1956, just a few days after signing from amateur club Cadishead.

The loose forward went on to make 29 appearances in the first team, playing alongside the likes of Brian Bevan, Harry Bath, Gerry Helme, Jim Challinor and Laurie Gilfedder, before injury ended his playing days in 1959.

He took up the whistle in 1961 and became a grade one referee.

Upon retirement, he became a Rugby Football League referee assessor and was a member of the Warrington Past Players’ Association.

His funeral will take place at Walton Lea Crematorium on Wednesday at 11.30am. For more details, contact 828291.
