TONY Smith says Lee Briers should be made to play under pressure more often after his golden-point drop goal sealed victory at Hull KR on Saturday.

Reflecting on the Challenge Cup quarter-final triumph, Smith hailed his experienced half back, highlighting his ability to make the big plays.

But Wolves' head of coaching and rugby only wishes Briers had come up with the winning point sooner, to save a few frayed nerves.

He said: "There are plenty of good contributors and Lee Briers came up with some fantastic plays at the end of the game when the pressure was on.

"Not a lot of people can come up with those plays but he certainly can and he thrives under that sort of pressure."

"We probably needed to put him under that sort of pressure earlier in the game and he’d probably come up with those plays more regularly," laughed Smith "He felt that he had the ability to kick it from anywhere inside their half and he was confident.

"I think that’s great. You need somebody in your team who’s willing to do that.

"And he was right about it, it just took him four goes to do it!"

Smith could not help but praise front row stars Adrian Morley and Garreth Carvell as well.

The pair have been on the receiving end of regular plaudits from Smith recently after a string of dominant performances, which have ensured Wolves plenty of front-foot possession.

That only continued at Hull KR, Morley even making the break that created Wolves' crucial fourth try, and Smith was once more quick to recognise his props' contribution.

He said: "They are immense, without a doubt. They were terrific with the ball and without it at times, they dominated.

"They're simply outstanding, both of them, and they’re working well together.

"I’m pleased, I think they deserve all the accolades they get."
