WARRINGTON Rowing Club pair Chris Johnstone and Tom Pearson rowed superbly to take the bronze medal in the championship J18 double sculls at the National Schools’ Regatta.

After coming through a tough semi final, they had a superb race in the final to clinch the medal at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham.

Warrington Rowing Club sent 22 competitors in a total of nine crews and reached four finals out of nine events.

Other finalists were the team of Susie Clark, Daisy Dell, Hannah Lester, Claudia Wright, Sophie McQuillian in the girls’ J14 quad sculls, Oliver Brierley and Tom Leather in the boys’ J16 double sculls and Henry Balcerak and Matthew Pownall in the boys’ J15 double sculls.

Alison Bailey and Emily Clark were semi-finalists in the girls’ J15 double sculls, while Hannah Furnell and Beth Laidlaw also reached the last four in the girls’ J14 double sculls.

The championship boys’ J18 quad sculls, Chris Johnstone, Tom Pearson, Mike Pownall, James Whitehead, second girls’ J14 quad sculls, Caitlin Anderson, Louise Bailey, Kate Furnell, Lucy Shard and cox James Moss, and boys J15 single scull, Oliver Brierley, were unable progress beyond the first round.

Throughout the weekend there was terrific support from the coaching team led by Warrington Guardian coach of the year Richard Sinnott with Martin Goswell and Dave Holder.

Meanwhile, Warrington Rowing Club rower Frankie Sinnott, daughter of coach Richard, won a bronze medal representing Runcorn Rowing Club with Fae Atkinson in the girls’ J15 double sculls.
