WARRINGTON golfer Phil Archer requires an improvement in form in the final few months of the season if he is to retain his European Tour card.

The 37-year-old is currently ranked 140th in ‘The Race to Dubai’ order of merit, 28 places outside the cut-off for 2010 cards.

Archer is on his fifth successive tour and hopefully will be spurred on by his third biggest pay day of the campaign at the weekend.

The Birchwood Golf Club professional finished 64th in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth with rounds of 72, 74, 76 and 71 leaving him five over par with winnings of 10,125 euros.

But May has not been as rewarding as Archer would have liked, having finished 141st at The 3 Irish Open, 42nd at the BMW Italian Open and 126th at the Open de Espana.

Archer’s best two performances of the season were his 13th place in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in the United Arab Emirates in January and 21st spot in the Maybank Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur in February.

Last year, the former Warrington Sports Personality winner ended the Tour in 106th spot having been unable to match the highs of his best season yet in 2007.

That campaign included second-place finishes in the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia in Spain and the Omega European Masters in Switzerland on the way to 29th-place on the Tour.

Archer is on the entry list for The European Open at The London Golf Club in Ash, Kent, starting today, Thursday, and running until Sunday.
