BEN Westwood cannot wait for derby day.

Wolves' big-hitting back-rower understands the importance to the fans of Friday's clash with Wigan Warriors, kick off 8pm, and says the players will need no extra motivation to beat their rivals.

He also understands the importance of the game to Warrington's season.

Warriors are currently just two points ahead of Wolves in the Super League table, so victory would take them level on points and a step closer to a play-off place.

But, despite going into the game on the back of an 18-16 victory at Hull - and four wins in five games - Westwood insists improvement must be made if they are to continue their ascent.

"Everybody is looking forward to this game and everybody involved in rugby in this area looks forward to it," said Westwood.

"You don't even need to fire yourself up for a game like this because it just comes naturally.

"When you get out there and the crowd are cheering you on, it gives you a massive boost and you raise your game."

He added: "It's going to take time for Tony Smith to get everything he wants out of us.

"We are heading in the right direction and the Hull game proved when things don't go our way we are still good enough to get the win.

"The good teams do that and that's what we need to start doing more often.

"But there's always improvements you can make after every game, no matter what score it was.

"There was a lot we need to work on and a lot we need to get right from the Hull game."

Westwood admitted it was a challenge for all the players to live up to the high standards set by head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith but one he is enjoying.

He said: "It's great working with Tony.

"It's a bit of a challenge because he's got such a big reputation and it's a challenge to step up and play for him.

"He always expects improvement but that's good. I'm really enjoying working with him and I think we can keep getting better."
