A MAGNIFICENT century from Dave Acton helped Glazebury continue their solid start to the Cheshire Cricket Alliance Division Two season at Ellesmere Port.

With a much depleted bowling line-up, the visitors faced a tough assignment against a side that did the double over them last season.

In-keeping with that form, Port made a fine start.

Skipper Chris Lord got the breakthrough for Glazebury, courtesy of a fine catch by Kyle Keeble in the deep.

But as soon as the wicket fell, the heavens opened.

After the resumption, Lord struck again but the hosts quickly got back into their stride, declaring on 221.

Glazebury lost three early wickets in reply, but a fine stand between newly-promoted opener Acton and Lord dragged the men from Hurst Lane back into the contest.

The fall of the latter’s wicket gave the home side new impetus, but Acton and Simon Green flayed the Port attack to all parts of the ground to take their side within sight of their target.

Green was patient at first before unleashing some characteristic big hitting on his way to 39 not out but the star of the show was youngster Acton.

He played chancelessly until the last over of the innings when he tore into the bowling, his 100 not out ensured a share of the spoils for his side as they closed on 202 for 4.

Heavy overnight rain forced the cancellation of the second XI’s Division Three game against Ellesmere Port and adverse weather also prevented a result in the third team’s trip to Leyland.

The outcome had to be decided by a bowl-out and the home club ran out 2-1 winners.
