WARRINGTON Wizards travel to Dewsbury Celtic in the Co-operative Rugby League Conference National on Saturday afternoon hoping to build on an impressive victory against East Lancashire Lions last weekend.

Alan Kilshaw’s side ended a run of four straight defeats to beat East Lancashire 70-22 and lift themselves to seventh in the league.

Player/coach Kilshaw said: “That was exactly the response we have been looking for. We had a much stronger side out than we have had in the previous four games and it showed.

“We won’t get carried away with the result but it will give us the confidence to kick on and get ourselves moving up the table.

“There were some excellent plays and our attack was devastating at times, especially down the left hand side.

“We were a little disappointed that we let East Lancs score five tries, but there was always a danger of that when the game dropped in intensity after we built up such a big lead.”

Kilshaw added: “Everyone is ready for a big week in training as we prepare for a massive game at Dewsbury.

“They are a very tough side to beat, especially on their own pitch, but we will be going there in the right frame of mind and if we play like we did last week then we will have a great chance of getting another win under our belts.”

For Saturday’s game Kilshaw will hope to have Scott Cullen, Darren Forshaw and Liam Cagliarini available after they all missed the East Lancashire game but Shaun Gilmour will still be missing with a shoulder injury.

The coach to Dewsbury leaves the Village Hotel at 11.30am. Contact Nikki on 837 829 for more information.

Warrington Wizards 70 East Lancashire Lions 22

WARRINGTON Wizards got back to winning ways when they outclassed a determined East Lancashire Lions side.

They opened the scoring in the 10th minute when second row Matt Wilson made a great break down the middle and stand off Kilshaw put Alan Reddecliff over between the posts. Warren Ayres added the conversion.

Ian Pirrie increased the lead five minutes later, intercepting a loose pass and racing 90 metres to score, before a fine interchange between Ayres and Wilson created room for Reddecliff to go over in the left corner.

Ayres landed a fine touchline conversion.

Just before the half hour, substitute Billy Sheen step round the defence to score and then, five minutes later, Wilson broke and found Ayres on his inside to touch down. Ayres added the extras to both tries.

Three minutes before the break Reddecliff raced 30 metres down the middle and sent in Sheen, Ayres converting, before centre Ben Williamson raced over right on the half-time whistle.

Wizards started the second half like a steam train and registered three quick tries.

Troy Alison brushed off three defenders to score, Sheen completed a fine hat-trick after a 50-metre dash and the impressive Wilson put Kilshaw over between the posts. Ayres converted the latter two scores to bring up the half century.

Reddecliff completed his hat-trick when he scored from close range, Ayres converting, but Lions hit back through Rav Daniels.

A superb 50-metre break by Wizards’ prop forward Matt Clarke allowed Ayres to score on 60 minutes but the visitors refused to give up and winger Simon Middlehurst forced his way over.

The hosts replied quickly when a short ball from Hayden James put Lee Rushton over.

Ayres added the extras before Lions scored an excellent try when Williamson raced 30 metres to touch down, Muir adding the conversion.

Matt Clarke forced his way over after a slick move but there was still time for the Lions to notch the final try through Muir.

Man of the match was awarded to Wizards’ second row Matt Wilson.
