IT is a mark of players’ focus on their week-to-week rugby when they achieve milestones they know nothing about.

Warrington Wolves prop forward Paul Wood is a perfect example after making his 200th appearance for the first team in Saturday’s success at Hull FC.

“I didn’t have a clue how many games I’d played to be honest,” said Wood.

“It was more important that we got the win really because we need to get on a roll.

“We know we’re a bit behind in the table. We’re not where we think we should be.

“We need to keep building confidence every week and a win at the KC Stadium will bring a bit of confidence because it’s a tough ground to go to.”

He added: “Two hundred games is a good milestone to reach.

“It is a lot of games. I made my debut in 2000 and between then and now there have been a lot of ups and some downs.

“The win at Hull at the weekend is one of my ups and now I’m looking ahead to the next 200 games!”

Wood echoed the words of boss Tony Smith in highlighting a poor first-half display that left Wolves 14-6 behind at the KC Stadium and then revealed a key moment in the turnaround.

“We got a bit of a roasting at half time,” he said.

“Tony wasn’t happy with the performances of the players.

“He is usually really cool in the dressing room but he had a few things to say.

“He basically put the onus on the players and said that he would be watching to see how we react.

“All the lads responded well and that’s a real positive for us.”

Smith was pleased with the way his players found a way to grind out the win.

He said: “Our players should be very proud of themselves with the way they pulled together in that second half and dug out a game of rugby league.

“When you’ve been playing poorly but turn it around and control the game in the way that they did to bring themselves back into it is pretty good going.”
