EARLY season catfish catches continue to dominate the news on Lymm Angling Club waters.

The pick of a trio of catfish landed was a monster specimen of 54lbs which fell to a carp angler who was fishing an overnight session on Lymmvale.

Hot on its heels was a 42lbs 8ozs catfish caught by Catfish Conservation Group member Ian Whittaker from Shakerley Mere.

The third catfish of the week was landed by new club member Liam Rooney from Crabmill Flash.

These fish can all be expected to put on significant weight during the coming months and it will be no surprise if the largest one reaches 60lbs by July.

Specimen bream and tench have shown more prominently in recent reports from Crabmill Flash, where five bream over 10lbs have been reported along with tench to over 8lbs.

The numbers of fish caught from this venue are low but their size continues to make the long wait for a bite worthwhile.

Lymmvale’s tench and carp remain fairly moody. Some days anglers fail to land a single fish but on other days it is non-stop action. Tench to over 9lbs and carp to 26lbs have been reported in multiple catches during the better feeding periods.

The popularity of Lymmvale has increased significantly and weekends continue to be particularly busy.

Members are advised to have another venue in mind as an alternative when planning a visit here in case the banks are full on arrival.

The club’s pleasure fishing pools continue to supply excellent sport.

Woodside Pool is fishing better than it has in years, with crucian carp in the 1lbs to 3lbs range, along with small rudd, quality perch, roach and tench, and the odd surprise carp to 19lbs making up catches averaging 30 fish per angler.

Skimmer bream, backed with roach and rudd to over 1lbs and carp to 9lbs, have made up the majority of captures at Village Pool.

Across the road on Whitley Pool, carp in the 5lbs to 14lbs range are dominating. Surprisingly this water receives comparatively little angler attention even though the carp captures per angler ratio is better than many other club waters.

The different strains of carp in Whitley Pool make the venue somewhat unique and a float-fished margin bait will often see a steady stream of crucian carp, tench and brown goldfish grace the net during times when the carp fishing slows.

The littering situation experienced recently on club waters seems to have been reduced significantly over the past couple of weeks.

However, the committee has again removed cards from two members following an incident on Crabmill Flash.

It appears to be new members who are having problems understanding the zero-tolerance policy on littering and even the thought of losing the membership money they have paid does not seem to deter them.
