LEIGHTON Sharman has added the 2009 Isle of Man International Youth Tour to his impressive successes.

The 11-year-old Eastlands Velo rider, based at the Manchester Velodrome, is the joint leader of the British Cycling National Youth Series after his success in the third round on the Isle of Man.

He was eight seconds behind going into stage three on Ramsey Promenade.

After finishing second, but almost 90 seconds ahead of one of his nearest rivals, the Gorse Covert Primary School pupil took the overall victory.

He finished second to fancied Manx rider Matt Bostock in the 1.29km time trial on the Friday night and was second in the Saturday stage on a very hilly course.

It was Sharman’s first overall victory over the season after finishing second in the Lincoln and Hyde rounds.

He currently leads the British Schools National Championship after three events - cyclo cross, mountain biking and roller racing, setting a record for 1km in the latter.

Sharman, who trains with Warrington Athletics Club and won the Cheshire Under 11s Cross Country Championship in January, finished runner up in the North West Track Championships last month.

Noticeable achievements last year saw him win the national series as well as the Under 12s National Road Race Championship among a total of 47 victories.
