WARRINGTON Athletics Club collected 26 titles at the Cheshire Championships at Victoria Park over the weekend.

And the town’s athletes finished in second or third places in another 30 events.

Top performances came from Ashley Kirsopp and Jack Gleave.

Kirsopp broke the championship best time with 12.5 seconds in the under 13s boys’ 75m hurdles, which takes him to the top of the UK rankings.

His run was also voted the best male track performance of the championships.

Gleave also moved to the top of the UK rankings when he led from gun to tape to win the 800m in a personal best time of 2mins 3.6secs, winning by almost the length of the straight.

He then returned on the Sunday to repeat his gun to tape run in the 1,500m to complete the double.

In the under 13s age group, Liam Burthem completed the same double as he defended his titles.

Harry Ellis and Steve Broadhurst fought out a race-long duel in the under 20s’ 1,500m, with Harry proving the stronger, and then on the Sunday he again front-ran the 800m to also complete the double.

In the 3,000m, Danny Cliffe stormed to victory from the front in the under 20s race, as did Tom Jervis in the under 17s event and Steve Broadhurst did likewise in the under 20s 2,000m steeplechase.

Tom Jervis took the under 17s 1,500m steeplechase title and was followed across the line by his four clubmates.

James Gladman romped to victory in the under 17s 100m hurdles, while Sam Dykes took the under 17s title in the 800m.

Daniel Richardson completed the 100m and 200m double to give the club every title on the track in the under 13s age group for boys.

In the field events, Kirsopp added the under 13s boys’ long jump title to his hurdles victory, while Wojciech Czaja took the senior titles in the long jump and triple jump, with Alex Wort taking the under 17s javelin title.

In the women’s events, Heather Beeton threw a championship best to succeed in the under 15s hammer competition.

Carys McAulay won the 800m title on the Saturday and then completed the double by winning the 1,500m on her debut at the distance despite being reluctant to run as nerves nearly got the better of her.

Her winning time puts her in seventh place in the UK rankings.

Kate Titlow won the under 20s 3,000m after a race-long battle with a Vale Royal athlete.

Other titles were won by Claire Irons in the senior hammer and Sarah Lewis in the under 17s 80m hurdles.
