WOLVES head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith believes Michael Monaghan hit new heights in his side's 56-8 Challenge Cup win at Featherstone Rovers.

Standing in as captain for the second consecutive game with Adrian Morley still out injured, Monaghan was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch.

The Australian provided leadership and spark from scrum half, leading Smith to heap the plaudits on him.

He said: "That is the best game I’ve seen him play while I’ve been here. I've already said that about a few different players but I haven't said it about Michael.

“He was terrific today. The way he went about his game was very good and as captain he showed good leadership as well.

"Before the match I could see a good performance coming from Michael and it did today."

Richie Mathers also impressed the Warrington boss after scoring two tries on his return debut for the club.

Making his first appearance since moving from Wigan last month, Mathers staked a strong claim for the full back spot, which has recently been held by Chris Riley.

Smith said: "He was good at the back today.

"It was nice for him to score a couple of tries but he did a lot of good things.

"He put his hand up at the right times to carry the ball and he was safe at the back."
