WHO is going to play in the halves alongside Michael Monaghan at Murrayfield?

Lee Briers is going to miss at least one week with a hamstring injury and is also doubtful for the following week’s Challenge Cup fifth round tie at Featherstone Rovers.

One ready-made replacement would have been Martin Gleeson, but he was sold to Wigan last month.

Chris Bridge has experience in the slot for Wolves, but it would take a very brave coach to take him out of the right centre slot after developing a wonderful partnership with points machine Chris Hicks over the last two weeks.

So that leaves head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith with options in Richie Mathers, Vinnie Anderson, Simon Grix and Jon Clarke, all of whom have figured in the role in an emergency measure in the past.

Hooker Clarke spent some time in the role in the 40-18 defeat of Huddersfield Giants at the weekend while Monaghan was off the field to get stitches in a head cut. Bridge had a spell there too.

Anderson and Grix are mainly back rowers who can help out in the centres more so than at six or seven.

Mathers is awaiting his first game after joining the club from Wigan and it would be a gamble to play him in such a key linking role when his usual position is full back, although stand off is not alien to him and he did figure there off the bench for Warrington in his loan spell with the club in 2002.

The selection that would cause least disruption to the rest of the team is Clarke, especially with another fellow England hooker, Mickey Higham, available to slot in at dummy half.

But expect Smith to keep everyone guessing right up until kick off.
