WORTHINGTON Lakes are fishing well for roach, bream, and carp with Warrington Anglers’ Association member Bernie Shorrocks reporting a catch of 14 bream to 4lbs plus roach taken on a small groundbait feeder and red maggot.

Rixton Claypits provided a good session for Andy Craddock who had an all-roach catch estimated between 30lbs and 40lbs. The successful method was loose-fed caster using a small waggler.

We are currently looking at re-organising and rebuilding pegs on this venue so any ideas and volunteers would be welcome.

Cicily Mill Pool is bang on form and Mike Thornbury caught tench and bream steadily all day on his visit last week.

Bob Brander similarly had a good catch but was surprised when a 9lbs pike took a fancy to his luncheon meat.

The Macclesfield Canal produced good results in the pairs event last week, with winner Paul Murrin sticking it out on worm for an all-perch catch of 9lbs 12ozs 1drm.

Doug Derbyshire and Roy Brown walked the team event with an impressive five points.

Jeff Shaw was one of only a few anglers to target roach and put a magnificent net of fish between 2ozs and 3ozs on the scales for 6-14-0.

The Welsh Canoe Union is trying to gain unlimited access to all rivers in Wales, using the same argument as their British counterparts, that the Government-advised negotiations for voluntary access agreements have failed.

I find this a bizarre sweeping statement because, considering all the river fishing rights that we own in Wales and England, I have never in all my years as secretary received a request from either organisation.

As both an angler and a canoeist I have no sympathy, for their plight is no different than that of an angler or angling club.

In the first instance, anglers must purchase an Environment Agency licence and only then start the negotiation process to seek permission to fish, by way of paying a day ticket, fishery rental or outright purchase for the right to access the river to fish. Why should they have it for free?

If members feel strongly about this issue, go on the Welsh Assembly website and, using fishery postcodes contained in our map book, find the relevant Welsh member to address your comments.
